Highway and road survey

Road construction & maintenance are mainline applications for LiDAR scanning. A newly build road needs to be checked as part of the BIM process whether it matches with design parameters. Road maintenance measures should be addressed effectively in order to save costs. A mobile scanner on a car or an airborne scanner can provide an accurate point cloud for modelling both road surface and its surroundings. Ground control points are needed to achieve centimeter level accuracy. Using photographs taken at the same time and control points measured with GPS improves the accuracy and helps to compensate the gaps in the GPS signal caused by tall buildings and trees.
