Preventing situations on water flood areas
The EU Floods Directive requires that all member countries map the areas that are at risk of flood in case of sea level rising, rivers flooding, or heavy rain falls. The directive instructs countries to produce flood risk maps and to take adequate measures to reduce the risk of flood damage for human safety, environment, infrastructure and property. This requires accurate elevation models of these areas to determine which zones are prone to flood at which water level.
Airborne LiDAR is the natural choice of method to capture data from large areas and to generate an accurate terrain model. A mobile scanning system mounted on a boat can also been used for scanning the riverbanks and nearby areas. Collected point cloud data is perfect for flood risk analyses for climate adaptation, emergency management, urban planning and planning and maintenance of channels and watercourses.
